It’s never too early to be working on your short game, and that was evident when SCGA Junior hosted the Short Game Showdown at the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim. The event was designed to help young golfers hone their touch around the greens by introducing them to fun ways to practice.
“Putting isn’t always my favorite thing to work on, but it has been today,” Nathan Zet said. “I was doing better today, and we had cool contests on the green, so that made it more fun.”
Roughly 60 junior golfers were split into four groups based on age and ability where they rotated through stations that each focused on one element of the short game – chipping, pitching, bunker work and putting. At each station the kids were taught by TGR Learning Lab and SCGA Junior coaches.
In addition to the educational aspect of each station, there was also a challenge in which participants could win Nike putters, wedges, drivers and Tiger Woods edition golf balls.
Samarah Joshiakar was the day’s big winner, taking home a prize from each station.
“I had a lot of fun today and I got a lot of really cool stuff,” Joshiakar said. “The bunker and pitching stations were my favorite because I learned a lot there.”
Even parents were impressed with how engaged all the kids were throughout the morning.
“This event is absolutely great,” said Marco Rodriguez, who’s son attended the event. “It’s really impressive how the coaches can keep all their kids’ attention the full time and keep them having fun.”
